Edgar Wright

This movie was directed by one of my favourite directors – Edgar Wright. Who also direcred ‘Hot Fuzz (2007),’ Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World (2010)’ and even worked on the Marvel movie ‘Ant-man (2015).’

Wright’s movies incorporate a certain type of editing which is quick and snappy. A lot of footage seems to be compressed and shown to the viewer in quick bursts. Almost every scene is packed with action and no filler. Also some of the scenes have quite a bit of British culture embedded into them such as dry wit, satire and even a cricket bat. There are many scenes with tea, beer, pubs and those dreadful bus journies.

Reoccurring Themes

As this is still a horror movie, there is bound to be the colour red used. Simon Pegg’s character can be seen wearing a red tie, red name tag and even his hair is reddish. The reoccurring phrase ‘you’ve got red on you,’ shows how Shaun is oblivious to what’s going on around him. It also foreshadows the bloodbaths he will be in when fighting the zombies.

The Soundtrack

Shaun of the Dead wouldn’t have been such a success without it’s well-fitting soundtrack. The use of the song ‘Ghost Town’ by The Specials did a great job setting the whole tone of the movie at the begining. And music by ‘Queen’ really helped this horror parody feel like a comedy – creating one of it’s most iconic moments –
